Max
History
In 1997 the University of Memphis started collaboration with Delta Axis where famous, international curators would be brought to Memphis.
These curators are free to create any show they wish as long as local artists are involved.
The purpose of the project is to place local artists within an international context. This exposes the curators to Memphis artists and the local artists to the work of their international colleagues.
Our successes included Kim Levin, the curator of MAX1997 giving John Salvest a one-man show at the Phoenix Contemporary Art Museum.
Other artists have been included in shows in New York and across the country after being included in MAX.
MAX demonstrates a goal of Delta Axis that is to better use existing art facilities in the city. Delta Axis pays for the curator and catalog and the University assumes all other exhibition costs. This collaboration produces an important art event at a reasonable cost.
