ARTIST STATEMENT

Every photographer has their greatest hits. But for each Top-40 picture, there are a thousand B-sides. Showing at Power House Memphis gave me the chance to draw from this pool. In choosing work, I wanted each piece to strike a lyrical chord both with the space and with the other pieces in the show.

The final selection is eclectic: 5 portraits of birds, 5 tunnels from Mao’s underground city in Beijing, and a video of birds circling a theater in Texas at dusk. I’m not trying to illustrate ideas. In putting these images together in this space I hope to make a kind of mournful music.
