POLITICALLY ERECT
Starr Bryce, Grier Edmundson, Michael Eudy, Dhanraj Emanuel, Nate England, Clifford Gordon, Erin Harmon, Chrystyna Kusch, Jeanne-Marie, Matt Loeser, Brad Long, Melanie Spillman and Miles Wolfe
Meikle Gardner , Curator
The artists in the show work with a variety of mediums to address a variety of issues that tie in with organizer Meikle Gardner's intention to confront the ridiculousness of the post-Janet-Jackson-fiasco wave of censorship and political correctness. The show will tackle a barrage of issues ranging from sexuality and gender roles to the Bush administration and the war in Iraq . While the idea for the show predates the Memphis College of Art “censorship-debacle,” the exhibition itself follows fast on the heels of the scandal that has the city’s art community wondering out-loud “What is okay or not okay to show?”
While the work of artists Miles Wolfe, Dhanraj Emanuel, Melanie Spillman and Brad Long may be known to the community, the show also features some new faces. Grier Edmundson is a recent addition to the Marshall Arts community, moving back to Memphis earlier this year after finishing his undergraduate studies in Baltimore. Erin Harmon is a recent Rhode Island School of Design graduate and the new drawing and painting instructor at Rhodes College. Chrystyna Kusch and Jeanne-Marie are working on their MFA's in painting at the University of Memphis. Michael Eudy is a painter from New York and Nate England, Clifford Gordon and Matt Loeser are currently enrolled in the graduate program at Memphis College of Art. Rounding out the bunch is Texas artist, Starr Bryce, who was featured in a two-person show at Delta Axis @ Marshall Arts in the spring of 2000.
